Inauguration and Establishment of the CELL


          The Inaugural function for the establishment of Ocean Science & Technology Cell [OSTC] in the Centre of Advanced Study in Marine Biology of Annamalai University and the National Colloquium on Marine Biology funded by the Department of Ocean Development [DOD], Government of India was held on the forenoon of 4th January 1999 in the Senate Hall of Annamalai University, Annamalai Nagar.
        Presiding over the function Dr. M.G. Muthukumarasamy, Vice Chancellor of the University after listing the achievements of the Centre, paid rich tributes to late Prof. R.V. Seshaiya, who started this Centre way back in the year 1951. Acknowledging the assistance of the DOD, he stressed that need based and community oriented research should be initiated.
        Dr. V. Sampath, Director, DOD and Vice Chairman of the OSTC, in his inaugural address explained in depth about the various activities of the DOD ranging from support to national institutes, coastal Universities and others with the lofty goal of extracting chemicals, drugs, metals from the sea, through deploying of two coastal research vessels one in the east coast of India and the other in the west coast of India for monitoring with regard to coastal environment, to Antarctic expedition all aimed with the ultimate purpose of harnessing vast ocean wealth for human welfare. Prof. Dr. PL. Sabarathinam, Registrar of Annamalai University, Prof.Dr. PR. Karpagaganapathy, Dean, Faculty of Science, Annamalai University and National Professor Dr.T.J.Pandian, Madurai Kamaraj University offered their felicitations.
        Earlier Prof. Dr. L. Kannan, Director of Centre of Advanced Study in Marine Biology welcomed the gathering and Prof. Dr. T. Balasubramanian, Research Coordinator of OSTC proposed the vote of thanks.
